    Erhan AFYONCU

    Born on 20 July 1967 in Tokat, Erhan AFYONCU completed his primary and secondary education in Tokat. He started his higher education in Marmara University, Atatürk Faculty of Education, Department of Social Sciences Education, Subdepartment of History Teaching in 1984 and he graduated in 1988. He was appointed as research assistant within the same department in 1989. He completed his Master’s Degree by presenting his thesis titled as “Necati Efendi Tarih-i Kırım (Rusya Sefaretnamesi)” [Necati Efendi, History of Crimea (Ambassadorial Account for Russia)] in 1990. Erhan AFYONCU earned his Ph.D. title by presenting his thesis titled as “Osmanlı Devlet Teşkilatında Defterhâne-i Âmire (XVI-XVIII. Yüzyıllar)” [The Central Registry in the Ottoman State Organization (16th and 18th Centuries)] in 1997. He became assistant professor in 2000 and started to work in Marmara University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of History in May 2001. He received the title of associate professor in 2008 and the title of professor in 2014.

    Erhan AFYONCU served as the Vice Dean in Marmara University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, History Department, as the Head of Modern History Department, as the Head of Sociology, and as the member in faculty councils and administrative councils. In 2012, he was appointed by the President Abdullah Gül as the member of the Board of Directors of Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language, and History. He became the Dean of Marmara University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences in February 2016. Erhan AFYONCU was appointed by the President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as the Rector of the Turkish National Defence University on 4 October 2016.

    He has published many academic books, such as Tanzimat Öncesi Osmanlı Tarihi Araştırma Rehberi [Research Guide for Ottoman History before Tanzimat Reform Era], Sahte Mesih (Osmanlı Belgeleri Işığında Dönmeliğin Kurucusu Sabatay Sevi ve Yahudiler) [False Messiah (Sabatay Sevi, the founder of the Apostasy, and the Jews under the Light of Ottoman Documents)], Osmanlı Devlet Teşkilatında Deftherhâne-i Âmire (XVI-XVIII. Yüzyıllar) [The Central Registry in the Ottoman State Organization (16th and 18th Centuries)], Süleyman Şah Türbesi [The Tomb of Suleyman Shah], and Turhan Sultan.

    Writing his academic knowledge with the popular language, he also published Sorularla Osmanlı İmparatorluğu (Ottoman Empire with Questions), Truva’nın İntikamı (Revenge of Troy), Yavuz’un Küpesi (Earing of Yavuz), Baltacı ve Katerina (Baltacı and Catherine), Kösem Sultan (Kosem Sultan), Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda Askerî İsyanlar ve Darbeler (Military Mutinies and Coup d’états in Ottoman Empire), Fransa’ya Osmanlı Tokadı (Ottoman’s Slap on France), 1453 Panorama Tarih Müzesi (1453 Panoramic History Museum), Osmanlı’nın Hayaleti (The Ghost of Ottoman), and Muhteşem Süleyman (Suleyman, the Magnificient).

    Having his ongoing researches on the topics of the Ottoman bureaucracy, history of war, Ottoman historians, and historiography, he has written many articles, presentations and encyclopaedia entries on these subjects. His works have been translated into English, German, Chinese, Serbian, Macedonian, Albanian, Arabic, Korean, and Romanian. Besides his academic papers, he also pens popular history articles.

    Prof. Erhan AFYONCU, Ph.D., is married and has three children.
