    Erhan AFYONCU

     

         He was born in Tokat in 1967. He completed his primary and secondary education in Tokat. He started Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education in 1984 and in 1988 he got his bachelor degree in Department of History Teaching. In 1989 he was appointed as research assistant in Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education Department of History Teaching. He got his MA degree in Marmara University Institute of Social Sciences Department of Early Modern Period, with the thesis named Nacati Efendi Tarih-i Kırım (Rusya Sefaretnamesi) in 1990. He got his PhD degree in Marmara University Institute of Turkic Studies Department of Early Modern Period, with the thesis named Osmanlı Devlet Teşkilatında Defterhane-i Amire (XVI-XVIII. Yüzyıllar) in 1997. He was appointed as assistant professor in 2000. In 2001, he was appointed to Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences History Department. In 2008, he was appointed as associate professor and 2014 he was appointed as professor.

     

        He worked as the vice chairman of Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences History Department. He also served as the chairman of the department of Early Modern History and board memberships of faculty and management. He served as the board member of Atatürk Culture, Language and History High Authority in between 2012-2015. He was appointed as the dean of Marmara University Faculty of Arts and Sciences in February 2016. In 4 October 2016 he became the founder rector of the National Defence University. He still holds this position.

         By the work of editing he contributed to translation of many works about the Ottoman history such as the Balio reports (reports of the Venetian ambassadors), Zinkeisen’s Geschihte Des Osmanischen Reiches in Europa (7 volume) and Jorga’s Gescihte des Osmanichen Reiches (5 volumes).

     

        His area of research consists of Ottoman bureaucracy, history of earthquakes, history of publication, and history of warfare, Ottoman historians and historiography. He has many articles, papers and encyclopedic entries. In his works about the İbrahim Müteferrika the founder of the first Turkish-Islamic publication and the Sabatai Sevi the founder of the dönmes, he unearthed important historical data. He was the advisor of 19 MA and 8 PhD theses about the Ottoman history.

     

         His works are translated into English, Arabic, German, Chinese, Serbian, Macedonian, Albanian, Romanian and Korean languages. Along with his academic studies he publishes popular history articles in newspapers and magazines.

     

          He is married and has three children.
